Performance and Talk

Dr. David Evans (The School of Modern Languages) performs John Cage’s experimental lecture on modern music, mushrooms, and more to a live audience. Comprising of one live voice read by Evans, and three pre-recorded voices that drop in and out in successive combinations, this experience was originally felt by those who first heard this seminal lecture at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, in 1961. This is followed by a discussion on Cage’s provocative statement on how and why we listen to music, as Dr. Evans evaluates why this lecture is as relevant today as it was over fifty years ago.
