The School of Modern Languages, in collaboration with The Byre Theatre, offers an exciting programme of events drawn from literature, film and cultures across world. Showcasing some of the cutting-edge research currently being carried out by the School of Modern Languages, we bring together artists, filmmakers, writers and academics in celebration and contemplation of exactly what it is that brings us together – languages! All events are open to university staff and students and the general public.

Loving Cinema: A Useful Life (2010) dir. Federico Veiroj

A Uruguayan film about a man’s love for cinema, A Useful Life is set in Montevideo’s legendary Cinemateca Uruguaya and follows the life of its manager, Jorge (Jorge Jellinek) who has worked there for twenty-five years. As the cinematheque closes due to financial difficulties, leaving Jorge unemployed, he changes his way of life to adapt to the new world he faces. The screening will be followed by a discussion on cinematheques in the age of multiplexes as well as Uruguayan cinema led by PhD students from Hispanic Studies.
