G&S Society: The Gondoliers
- Times & Dates
In the long and winding canals of Venice, a case of mistaken identity looms large over the Gondoliers and the fair maidens that adore them. Humble Gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmeri have just married their sweethearts Gianetta and Tessa, but their honeymoon is put on hold when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro, and their daughter Casilda, the new Queen Consort of Baratia arrive and inform Marco or Giuseppe that one of them is the rightful heir to the throne, after one brother married Casilda in their infancy. The king’s rightful son was raised secretly in Venice by a humble Gondolier in the hope he would be protected from the many insurrections of Barataria, but no one can remember which one it is! Leaving behind their lovesick wives, Marco and Giuseppe sail to Barataria where the truth awaits them. With fabulous dance numbers, sung quartets and quintets, and a bevy of beautiful maidens, Arthur Sullivan’s beautiful music will transport you to the heady decadence of Venice, while Gilbert’s libretto satires notions of class and the nobility remains as relevant as ever.
The University of St Andrews Gilbert and Sullivan Society have been delighting audiences across the UK for over 40 years, from their acclaimed adaption of The Golden Legend (2016) to their sell out production of The Mikado (2016), as well numerous appearances at Buxton and The International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.
