The Browning Version by Terrence Rattigan (1948)

Greek Classics teacher, Andrew Crocker Harris is humiliated by his headmaster, mocked by his pupils and cuckolded by his cruel and disappointed wife. But one small act of kindness is about to revive the desiccated ‘Crock’s’ shattered life. Moving, humorous and displaying a profound understanding of the human heart, only those made of steel will be able to sit through this play dry-eyed.
