MOZART Symphony No 35 ‘Haffner’
NIELSEN Clarinet Concerto
PROKOFIEV Symphony No 1 ‘Classical’
BEETHOVEN Symphony No 1
Mozart’s ‘Haffner’ Symphony makes a rousing opening to the final summer tour and the opening of the St Andrews 2018/19 Season by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Nielsen’s brilliant and sparky Concerto follows, which the highly talented, young clarinettist Mark Simpson plays to perfection, as he did when he received the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year 2006. The concert concludes with a couple of ‘firsts’: the shenanigans and wit of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’, and Beethoven’s fascinating homage to Haydn in his Symphony No 1.
“THE CENTREPIECE OF THE CONCERT PROVED TO BE THE PERFORMANCE OF NIELSEN’S CLARINET CONCERTO, BY THE ÜBER-TALENTED MARK SIMPSON. [IT IS] A WORK THAT SHOWS OFF THE FULLEST RANGE OF THE INSTRUMENT’S CAPABILITIES” BACHTRACK
SIMPSON HAS ALL THE TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT TO DEAL WITH EVERYTHING NIELSEN THROWS AT THE SOLOIST.
