While Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde may be familiar to many of us, Frank Martin’s intimate opera offers a medieval reimagining of the legend.

In Le Vin herbé Tristan and Iseult are brought together not by choice, but by fate and the mistaken sip of magical a love potion. Martin’s haunting score carries us on a journey across the tumultuous oceans between our lovers beautifully evoking their passion, love and, inevitably, their tragedy.

Sung in English by a cast comprised of some of St Andrews’ finest vocalists, this production of Le Vin herbé pays homage to the fact that it was originally written as an oratorio, and not as a full-blown opera with an elegant, stripped back production, created especially for Byre Opera.
