TiLT Travels in Literary Translation
Tuesday 20 October 2026
6.00pm – Pay What You Can £6.00 / £4.00
Travel in literary translation becomes more attractive in times fraught with personal and ethical danger for the traveller. Starting with the observation that literary translation allows one to tilt a supposedly familiar picture to glimpse it anew, author and translator Annette Hug and researcher Andrew Cusack will consider what literary texts in translation have to offer readers seeking to perceive their world in terms of horizontal, non-hierarchical relations between the reader’s ‘here’ and the ‘there’ of the text. The conversation will be leavened with readings from Annette Hug’s novel Wilhelm Tell in Manila about the travels of José Rizal (1861-1896) in Germany and his translation of Schiller’s play Wilhelm Tell, a work that inaugurates Annette Hug’s commitment to translating Philippine literature and amplifying the voices of its authors.
